There is a general theme throughout The Hobbit. That is: Extraordinary things can happen by common people.
Bilbo was a regular hobbit that ended up becoming a hero in the adventure. He had to free the others in the company from giant spiders in Mirkwood, he freed his friends from the Elven dungeons, and he lured Smaug out of the mountain so the dwarfs could have their reward. Bilbo did extraordinary things, although he was a regular hobbit from the Shire.
