This entire story happened because of Thorin. When Thorin was a younger dwarf, Smaug the dragon came and coveted the gold in the mountain. He killed Thorin's father, Thrain, and took over the mountain. But besides Smaug, Orcs were attacking the dwarfs as well. To Thorin's dismay, he saw the Elves standing a ways off. He needed their assistance in taking down the Orcs. But the Elves, fearing to lose their kin, left without fighting. This made Thorin have an ever-hot grudge against all Elves. To worsen this, he had to leave the Lonely Mountain and go into exile. He vowed that he would find a way to take back the mountain and bring peace to the Dwarfs.
