The Major Characters in The Hobbit
Bilbo Baggins the Hobbit
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/4050133.jpg?1366062749)
This is Bilbo Baggins. He is a very well-mannered hobbit and likes visitors, but he wasn't expecting fourteen guests to appear at his doorstep. He agrees to join the throng of dwarfs and he helps a lot along the way. He was promised one fourteenth of the gold under the mountain, so he kind of went for that reason. Still, throughout the adventure, he complains about not having his pocket-handkerchief or his comfy armchair.

Thorin Oakenshield
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/9628860.jpg?1366061581)
This is Thorin Oakenshield. He is the leader of the dwarfs and King under the Mountain. He was the King in the Lonely Mountain, until Smaug came and killed off his people. In the story, he started this expedition by gathering other dwarfs. He wanted revenge, so he asked Gandalf for advice of who should be the fifteenth member of the company, which happened to be Bilbo. After all of the adventures, Thorin is killed in The Battle of the Five Armies and is never able to rebuild his past.

Gandalf the Wizard
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/2913765.jpg?1366064116)
Gandalf is the wizard who joined with Thorin to defeat Smaug. He is the guide of the company and he leads them to many perils (most of the time accidentally). He is, most of the time, just another member of the company. He doesn't mean for a lot of things to happen, but he tries to help as much as possible.

Balin the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/2939346.jpg?1366061854)
This is Balin. He is the oldest of the company (besides Gandalf) and he was in the house of Thorin when Smaug came. He is determined to help his king, so he tagged along.

Dwalin the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/2983864.jpg?1366062215)
Dwalin, Balin's brother, is another dwarf that is in the company. He is a strong and tough dwarf. He wants to help the King under the Mountain and his brother, so he helps along.

Fili the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/7099818.jpg)
Fili, brother of Kili, is a young but brave dwarf. He is very quick to temper, but as are all dwarfs. He is usually one of the scouts because of his great sense of direction and sense. He helps out during the book, but is killed in the Battle od the Five Armies along with his brother.

Kili the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/6986819.jpg?1366062840)
Kili, brother to Fili, is also a young dwarf. He works with his brother most of the time and he is also one of the scouts. He is very good with the bow and is also a very brave dwarf. He does a lot of slaying in The Hobbit, but he, along with Thorin and Fili, dies in the Battle of the Five Armies.

Nori the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/1366063174.jpg)
Nori, related somehow to Dori and Ori, is an okay dwarf. He is just like all of the other dwarfs. He is strong, reckless, tough, and quick-tempered. He is also bound to one purpose: to aid Thorin in regaining the throne and defeating Smaug the Dreadful.

Dori the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/9212915.jpg?1366063511)
Dori, related to Ori and Nori, is practically just like Nori. He doesn't have much except for brute strength and cunning. Also during the course of the journey, this dwarf is called upon to carry Bilbo if they must flee for a while or it's just getting to hard for a hobbit.

Ori the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/1366063543.jpg)
Ori, relative of Nori and Dori, is just like his brothers but a lot more jokish. He looks very much like a prankster, but he still is another tough dwarf.

Oin the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/4606195.jpg)
Oin, along with his brother Gloin, are both very strong and brute, but they don't do much else. They protect Thorin and Bilbo most of the time, and they do a lot more fighting then sitting or baby-sitting.

Gloin the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/792625.jpg)
Gloin, along with his brother Oin, are both very strong and rough, but they don't do much else. They protect Thorin and Bilbo most of the time, and they do a lot more fighting then a lot of the other dwarfs.

Bifur the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/1661813.jpg)
Bifur is a veteran to fighting alongside Thorin and his brother Bofur. He is excellent at fighting and slaughtering, so he is always on the company's good side.

Bofur the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/8275259.jpg?1366064059)
Bofur, along with Bifur, is very agile and fast. He is very tricky to defeat so he defeats a lot of orcs and goblins throughout the book. He also is a very good person to Bilbo (unlike some of the other dwarfs).

Bombur the Dwarf
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/1366064093.jpg)
Being the fattest of the group, he is most of the time last. He is most of the time behind everyone else, but he still does a bit of running throughout the story. Though made fun of and criticized, he helps a lot throughout the book (like save the rest of the company from a horde of goblins).

Beorn the Shape-shifter
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/1366143275.jpg)
Beorn is a magnificent man who has the ability to change his form (he usually changes into a bear at night). He is only in one part of the story. When the fifteen travelers need advice, assistance, and a renewal of supplies. Beorn welcomes them in, but also helps defeat the Orcs in The Battle of The Five Armies.
Bard the Bowman
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/1366143624.jpg)
Bard is a descendent of the king of Dale (a land close-by the Lonely Mountain). He only appears in the story at the end. He is the one who slays Smaug at the end of The Hobbit. He also helps out in The Battle of The Five Armies, standing along side the other Men of Laketown and Dale.

The Thrush
![Picture](/uploads/1/9/3/6/19367279/3167814.jpg)
This thrush is important to the story. It helps the dwarfs find the secret entrance to The Lonely Mountain. It also helps Bard the Bowman find the one spot on Smaug that would kill him.
